Adaptive Rowing

Adaptive rowing in action - Helene Raynsford

Adaptive rowing is open to physically and visually impaired athletes. It has four boat classes, all of which race over 1000m on a still water, straight course:

  • LTA4+ (legs, trunk & arms coxed 4). It has sliding seats and is a mixed gender boat.
  • TA2x (trunk and arms double scull). It has fixed seats and is a mixed gender boat.
  • ASM1x (men’s arms only single scull). It has a fixed seat and is for men only.
  • ASW1x (women’s arms only single scull). It has a fixed seat and is for women only.

Although the boats may have some adaptations to accommodate disable rowers, in most other areas it meets the rules and regulations for able bodied rowers. In non Paralympic years, rowing is the only sport to have fully inclusive World Championships. 23 Nations competed in Adaptive Rowing events at the 2007 World Rowing Championships in Munich.

It is a new sport to the Paralympic programme and makes its debut in Beijing.
