Coaching in Disability Sport

Support and advice from sports coach UK

Sports coach UK is dedicated to guiding the development and implementation of a coaching system, recognised as a world leader, for all coaches at every level in the UK.

The UK Coaching Framework - developed following an extensive consultation process led by sports coach UK - provides the blueprint to achieve this.

The vision of the UK Coaching Framework is to create a cohesive, ethical, inclusive and valued coaching system where skilled coaches support children, adults, players and athletes at all stages of their development in sport, and that is world-leading by 2016.

The Framework highlights how sports coach UK plans to work in close partnership with governing bodies of sport and each of the home country sports councils to enhance the quality and quantity of coaches at all levels of sport, leading to increased and sustained participation and improved performance.

This will be underpinned by:

  • clear career structures for coaches as part of professionally regulated vocation, recognising volunteer and part/full-time roles
  • a cohesive and world-leading coaching system

To achieve this sports coach UK's core areas of work are:

Strategic Role
To lead, develop and support strategic planning for coaching and coach education and development by national, regional and local sports organisations.

UK Disability Sport - Coaching, Learning and Leadership
The need to establish a Disability Coaching Source Group to provide expert advice to improve disability coaching within an inclusive coaching system was identified within the UK Coaching Framework. Commitment from the Home Nation Disability Sports Organisations provided the opportunity to call key partners together and the UK Disability Sport Coaching, Learning and Leadership group (UKDSCL&L) was created and met for the first time on 1 February 2007. The UK members will lead and shape the requirements for disability sports coaching and leadership throughout the UK and inform the UK Coaching Framework and its associated 5 Strategic Actions on issues relating to the needs of disabled coaches and coaches of disabled people.
