What is a desirable characteristic?

Each sport has specific demands and traits that are unique to that particular sport. These range from components of fitness (e.g. speed and power), to body type characteristics (e.g. tall or short) and many more. Each person may be better at some sports than others based on how well they ‘match’ the profile of that sport.

Looking at the desirable characteristics of each sport, may help to inform you about which sports may (or may not) be suitable for you. However there is no guarantee and there are always exceptions to the rule!

BOCCIA

The following is a list of desirable characteristics for the game of boccia. If you are interested in playing at an elite level then matching these characteristics may help:

SKILL

Boccia is a game of skill. The main skills that are required for success are:

  • Accuracy
  • Consistency
  • Ability to play to all areas of the court (i.e. short, middle and long)
  • Ability to displace or manipulate balls that are in play (i.e. hit balls out the way)
  • Tactical awareness

PHYSICAL

Although boccia is played in a stationary position and involves little movement, fitness is still an important aspect. Some basic desirable components of fitness for boccia are:

  • Strength – e.g. the ability to throw the full length of the court (12.5 metres)
  • Endurance – boccia games can last over an hour and tournaments involve many games over consecutive days
  • Balance – Maintaining a good body position while throwing

PSYCHOLOGICAL

Competitive boccia requires high levels of mental skills such as:

  • Concentration/focus
  • Ability to play under pressure

DISABILITY TYPE

The majority of boccia players have severe cerebral palsy but other severe disabilities such as muscular dystrophy can also play.

OTHER DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS

Some other general desirable characteristics for elite level boccia are:

  • Competitive nature
  • Commitment
  • Dedication
