Well what can I say; I’m lucky enough to be in Beijing with ParalympicsGB supporting the team. But rather than talking about all the amazing achievements of the team, you can read about them at www.paralympics.org.uk, I wanted to talk about what the Paralympics have done to disability awareness. I guess the first thing to talk about is that 150million people watched the Paralympic torch relay and viewing figures for the opening ceremony are expected to be towards half a billion, so not bad!! But with this world wide exposure of disability sport what will happen on an everyday basis?

I guess the hope is, certainly in China, that people will see that disabled people can be exceptional in many things other than sport. That actually drive, determination and will to succeed is a human trait and not an able bodied trait.

Hopefully you are reading this as someone who is using Parasport as a way to get involved in sport. We all know about the power of sport in terms of building confidence, self belief as well as keeping fit, but unless you work in sport does this translate to the classroom or workplace?

To finish my first blog however I want to let you all know that the spirit of the Paralympics is in full effect within Beijing. Dare I even say the locals are enjoying the Paralympics more than the Olympics?! With 147 countries and over 4,000 athletes one thing is for sure, the Paralympics truly is a first class worldwide event.
